Uganda’s Janet Museveni Honored as 2024’s Most Decent First Lady of Africa

The First Lady of Uganda, Janet Kataha Museveni, was honoured by Decent Africa as the epitome of grace and compassion, earning the title of Most Decent First Lady of Africa for 2024. This prestigious accolade was presented during a ceremony on 27 June 2024 at the Uweso Masulita Children’s Village, coinciding with her 76th birthday celebration. The event, attended by family and eminent figures, including His Excellency President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, accentuated her commitment and profound influence across the continent.

Hon. Janet Museveni’s recognition for the second time in a decade highlights her sustained dedication to fostering a society of integrity and decency. Decent Africa, a subsidiary of HiPipo established in 2014, spearheads initiatives to promote women’s decency, empowerment, and financial inclusion from grassroots to influential levels throughout Africa.

The celebration was also marked by commendations from Owek. Hon. Joyce Nabbosa Ssebugwawo, the Patron of Decent Africa and Uganda’s State Minister for ICT and National Guidance. She lauded the First Lady for her transformative impact on education, healthcare, and social welfare, stating, “Your Excellency, your leadership not only inspires many but also crafts a lasting narrative of hope across Uganda and Africa.”

The award selection process involved rigorous evaluation of criteria such as Integrity and Authenticity, cultural representation, and Public Engagement, ensuring the honour reflects genuine merit and influence.

In her remarks, Minister Owek. Ssebugwawo invited the First Lady to attend the forthcoming Decent Africa Summit in December 2024, an event set to recognise and celebrate the contributions of First Ladies across the continent.

Innocent Kawooya, head of Decent Africa, emphasised the critical role of digital engagement in enhancing the visibility and approachability of First Ladies. He noted the existing gap, with only about 30% maintaining a robust social media presence. He emphasised the need for more dynamic online platforms to foster better connections, particularly with the youth.

This accolade reaffirms Janet Museveni’s exceptional contributions and relentless pursuit of advancing the values of decency throughout Africa, serving as an example of hope and an inspiration to many.
